Honda Claims Its Electric Cars Will Charge in 15 Minutes by 2022

Honda claims that its electric cars will be able to charge in 15 minutes which is a huge step forward in normalizing EVs.

Until now in the EV technologies, he biggest downsides of electric car ownership has been the inability to charge quickly.

According to Nikkei, the world’s largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines claims it will have electric vehicles capable of a full charge in just 15 minutes by 2022.

Honda is currently sourcing its batteries for plug-in hybrids from Panasonic but they are looking to further collaborate with Panasonic on its quick charging battery.

Honda, like all EV car manufacturers are finding unique challenges with their electrified cars.

Some of these challenges involve engineering lighter bodies that are able to go farther on a single battery charge to reduce the range anxiety that’s been plaguing EV drivers since their introduction.

Hondas EV goal is to have its vehicles travel 150 miles on a 15-minute charge. Currently, the quickest chargers can only charge an EV battery to about 80 percent in roughly 30 minutes.

Although this is very good, it is still not good enough to establish widespread acceptance of electric vehicles. As everyone who drives a regular combustion engine vehicle knows, there is a huge convenience to quickly filling fuel tanks at a petrol station in just a couple of minutes.

Unlike many other car manufacturers, rather than looking on how many miles a vehicle can go on a giant battery Honda is focusing on how far an EV can go on a 15-minute charge.

This will no doubt appeal to drivers who are currently skeptical of electric vehicles and concerned about charge times and range anxiety. So by Honda putting range into real-life, everyday language that’s easy to understand.

It remains to be seen though how far along established electric competitors like Nissanand Tesla will be in five years. Will a full charge in 15 minutes already be the industry standard by then? If so, Honda is going to have to do a little more to stand out in the plug-in segment.
