Facebook say they are not interested in building cars

Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg confirmed in Germany last week that they are not interested in building cars.

Ms Sandberg was addressing Germany’s most powerful automakers and said that, Facebook, which is the world’s biggest social network does not want to compete with them in building cars.

This comes after a trend which is seeing tech companies showing interest in building cars. Sandberg was speaking at the opening ceremony of the Frankfurt motor show, where she met with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“I come with very good news. We’re the only company in Silicon Valley that’s not building a car,”

Facebook is sponsoring a “new mobility world” at the Frankfurt show that brings together carmakers, tech companies and startups in areas such as autonomous driving and electric cars.

Facebook is to join an urban mobility test project in Munich with German car manufacturers and also start-ups and said it will also sponsor a new university in Berlin focused on digital product development.

Facebook, at the moment, has about 30 million active users in Germany out of a population of 80 million.
