Number of new cars licensed in April slows down by 9.6%
The Central Statistics Office have released their latest figures which show a dramatic drop in new car sales for April.
The latest statistics show that the number of new private cars licensed for the first time in April fell by 9.6% compared to the same month last year.
The CSO said 13,427 cars were licensed for the first time last month which is down from the 14,847 at the same time last year.
In contrast to these figures, a total of 7,272 used or imported cars were licensed last month which is a 29.3% jump on the same time last year.
It would seem that buyers are crossing the border to take advantage of the weakness in sterling due to Brexit concerns.
Although there was an increase in used and imported cars, there was also a 29.5% drop in the number of new goods vehicles licensed in April compared to the same month last year.
In the first four months of the year, the CSO said that a total of 74,180 new private cars were licensed. This figure is also down by 10.9% on the same time last year.
In the same first four months of the year, the number of used cars jumped by 52%, which is huge, compared to the first four months of last year.
Once again, the figures show that Volkswagen was the most popular make of new car licensed last month, followed by Nissan, Opel, Ford and Renault.
