Irish motorists should get cheaper insurance cover from abroad

An Oireachtas committee set up to tackle rip-off motor insurance in Ireland is to recommend changes be implemented as soon as possible.

They maintain that Irish motorists should be able to get cheaper car insurance abroad.

The Dail’s finance committee is also critical of the “considerable” amounts of money which Irish motorists who have clean driving licenses are being asked to pay.

The recommendations may call for a specific claims mechanism to be set up to deal with soft tissue and whiplash injuries.

Part of the recommendations also calls for the scrapping of windscreen paper insurance disks.

John McGuinness, the committee chairman, wants motor insurance policyholders to obtain insurance at a reasonable price.
